The Power of Light

Visibility is crucial to the performance of healthcare workers, from nurses to surgeons. Without the proper medical lighting equipment and visibility to perform specific tasks, the possibility of error increases. The right lighting can also help make patients feel more comfortable and at ease during procedures and testing.

Lighting can be added to all types of medical keypads including membrane switch keypads, anti-microbial membrane keypads, medical touchscreens, and rubber keypads. Medical keypad and interface lighting help provide safety and accuracy across many applications including:

  • Infusion Pumps
  • Nurse Stations
  • Patient Monitor
  • Diagnostic Equipment
  • Blood Analyzers
  • Defibrillators
  • Hospital Beds
  • Imaging Equipment
  • Ventilators
  • Home Health Care Devices

Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting in the medical and healthcare space can help relieve anxiety and enhance comfort in patients making them feel more at home. Lighting can also provide visibility during important procedures. Applications include:

  • MRI Lighting
  • Operating Room Overhead Lighting
  • Patient Room Lighting

Phototherapy

Flexible overhead lighting and blanket systems deliver user-friendly phototherapy to treat jaundice in babies in hospitals and homes, nationally and internationally. These are sold through GE HealthCare.

    Infusion IV Pump

A leading manufacturer of medical devices and laboratory equipment contacted us to develop a fiberoptic backlight for a membrane switch assembly on an IV infusion pump. We used our Uniglo Fiber Optic Technology due to its design flexibility, uniformity, thinness, and durability. A design challenge was to backlight a membrane switch overlay with a cut-out for an LCD screen while utilizing one 5mm LED to backlight the entire assembly. This was accomplished by selectively extracting the light only in the specific areas that needed to be backlit, allowing a decreased quantity of fiber strands to be crimped inside the brass termination of the panel.

    Portable Ultrasound

Our customer, the only US-based manufacturer of portable ultrasound scanners for veterinarians and livestock producers worldwide, presented our team with an opportunity to backlight a membrane switch keypad for their newest product. Our engineers developed a custom solution conforming to the complex geometry. The intense light of our .3mm Clad Flat Fiber™ material was strong enough to provide superior illumination and its thin profile offered exceptional tactile response and effortless integration.

    Closed MRI Bore Light

A leading MRI manufacturer presented us with the opportunity to light up the inside of a closed MRI bore. The primary purpose of the bore light strips was to create a therapeutic glow of warm light to put patients at ease. Two fiberoptic light strips were used per bore and were lit with only one light source—our Woven and Uniglo technologies. Illuminating the interior of an MRI bore poses a unique challenge to introduce light without affecting functionality. The use of our stranded fiber optic technologies allowed the customer to do just that. The solutions include a 130” cable that connects to a remote light source allowing the light source to be placed in a shielded room to prevent interference with the MRI.
