Fiber Optic Panels

Fiber Optic Panel Technology

Fiber optic lighting uses optical fiber as a “light pipe,” transmitting light from a source through the fiber to a remote location. The source can be anything from an LED to a HID lamp depending on the brightness required.  Fibers can be plastic or glass and are typically bundled together and coupled to the light source.  They can be utilized to light as a point source or can be made to side emit and used to illuminate a large surface along the length of the fiber bundle.  Due to the low attenuation, fiber optics can allow the source to be remote from the area to be lit.

UniGlo®

Lumitex’s patented UniGlo® technology utilizes a proprietary process that uses plastic optical fiber panels to create light where you need it. UniGlo® processed backlighting panels are constructed of .010" diameter cladded plastic optical fibers. We can integrate a reflective backing to create a light guide panel as thin as .013".

Multiple layers can be used to enhance brightness while maintaining uniformity. The fiber optics allow a single light source to be placed remotely, with the option to use multiple sources for variable colors and intensities. Single layer Uniglo panels have excellent tactile feel through membrane switches.  In addition, this technology is ideal for LCDs, panels, control consoles, PRNDLs, keyless entry, machine vision, man-machine interface, elastomeric keypads, courtesy lights, signs and point of purchase overlays.

Benefits

Efficient Design – Minimal engineering charge with low-cost tooling. We can design and build a prototype for your application in less than 2 weeks.

Thin, Low Profile – Typical construction is .013 inches thick (0.33mm) including the back reflector.

Long Life – Our durable fiber optic panel have been in use for over 20 years.  LED light sources offer 10,000 to 100,000 hours of continuous operation.

Uniform Lighting – Lumitex fiber optic backlighting is so effective in uniformly spreading light that single and multiple LEDs can be used for completely uniform backlighting panels.

Selective patterns – The proprietary light extraction process can be modified to illuminate specific shapes and areas, enhancing the brightness and contrast in those regions.

Range of Colors – Standard LED colors include green, white, blue, red, amber and yellow-green.  RGB LED’s can be used to effectively provide any desired color.

Woven

Our proprietary computer-controlled process produces precisely-engineered micro bends in the optical fiber to uniformly extract the light throughout the panel length. The cladded fiber allows us to integrate back reflectors, brightness enhancing films, and adhesives to improve the assembly into your product. Carefully selected light sources provide the necessary color, uniformity, and output necessary to meet your products demanding appearance and functionality.

Benefits

Efficient Design – Minimal engineering charge with low-cost tooling. We can design and build a prototype for your application in less than 2 weeks.

Brightness – We can select the proper source to meet your light output requirements.

Heat/EMI Free – Our Woven Fiber Optic panels allow the source to be remote from other sensitive electronics so that the panel generates no heat or electromagnetic interference.
